Choosing the Correct Protective Hygiene Product
Prevail™ knows that there are many different types of leaks and many different types of bodies. That's why we've tailored the design of our protective hygiene products to fit your gender, type of incontinence, and level of leakage. Please visit our Product Finder tool and select your gender, leakage type, and required absorbency, and we'll point you to the best protective hygiene products for your needs.
Size Selection
Use our Height/Weight Charts to determine the best size for you. Adding a few inches or shaving off a few pounds can be tempting, but please be as accurate as possible when reporting your dimensions. Keep in mind, products that are too small could be uncomfortable and products that are too large could sag and allow leaks.
How to Wear Your Protective Hygiene Products
For optimal performance, it's important to be wearing your Prevail absorbent undergarments correctly. Make sure they rest snuggly against your body. It's also key to wear only one product at a time. Wearing multiple products may seem more protective but it actually hinders the absorbency process and can cause product leakage.
Troubleshooting
If you're concerned about the performance of your pad or protective underwear, we're here to help. Ask yourself the following questions to see if any of these issues might be causing your products to work less effectively.
Leaks
- Are you wearing the right absorbency level? Please refer to our Product Selection Guide to make sure you have the best product for your needs.
- Are you wearing the correct size? Protective underwear and briefs that are too large might sag and allow leaks. Please refer to our Height/Weight Charts to find the optimal size for your body.
- Are the undergarments making contact with your body? Make sure you have a snug fit.
- Are you using barrier creams? They could be affecting the wicking action of your absorbent products. Make sure you're following the product manufacturer's instructions.
- Are you "doubling-up" your products in an effort to maximize absorbency? Using two products simultaneously (i.e. inserting a pad into a brief or protective underwear) tends to hinder the absorbency process and may be the source of your leaks.
Skin Irritation
- Is your skin "scalded" at the mid-thigh area? You might not be wearing the product close enough to your body. Make sure you're getting a nice, snug fit.
- Is your skin blistered at the upper thigh? Check that the leg openings are resting on the natural creases of the groin.
- Are you changing the product regularly? This could also cause irritation.
- Are you effectively cleaning after each episode of leakage?
Absorbency
- Are you wearing the right product for your level of leaks and mobility? Please refer to our Product Selection Guide to make sure you're using the right protective hygiene for your type of leaks.
- Are you wearing the correct size? Briefs that are too large might sag and therefore allow leaks. Please refer to our Height/Weight Charts to find the optimal size for your body.
- Is the product making contact with your perineal area? Make sure you're getting a nice, snug fit.
Odor
- Are you effectively cleaning after each episode of leakage?
- Are you properly rolling up and securing your used hygiene products before disposal? We recommend wrapping used items in plastic shopping bags or plastic gloves before disposing. Using a trash receptacle with a secure lid is another a great way to prevent odor.
